The Cosmic Mario Adventure Meets All Expectations

Growing up, I missed out on owning the popular Wii. Certainly, I experienced Wii Sports and other premier games while staying with family and friends back in that era, however I missed owning the console myself, meaning I missed out on numerous outstanding titles from Nintendo's beloved series.

Among those titles included Super Mario Galaxy, together with its follow-up, got modernized recently and ported to the Nintendo Switch. The initial release was also included as part of the 2020 collector's set Super Mario 3D All-Stars. I welcomed the chance to play what many consider among the finest Mario games ever made. I became immediately engrossed, and I confidently state it matches about 18 years of excitement. However, it’s also made me realize how pleased I feel movement-based inputs mostly stayed as historical features.

Starting the Space Journey

Like any other Mario storyline, Super Mario Galaxy opens as Bowser nabbing Princess Peach including her home. His collection of spacecraft resembling pirates transport her among the stars, throwing Mario out amongst the stars during the event. Mario meets adorable stellar beings known as Lumas and meets Rosalina aboard her comet ship. She charges Mario with finding stars to fuel the Observatory to follow the villain, opening exploration opportunities to start discovering.

Super Mario Galaxy’s platforming offers pleasure, and all it took experiencing a couple levels to understand why it’s held in such high regard. It seems recognizable for those who tried a 3D Mario, and the mechanics prove user-friendly and natural following Nintendo's style.

Innovative Physics Mechanics

As a space nerd, the setting perfectly matches my interests, enabling Super Mario Galaxy to play with planetary forces. Orbital stages allow Mario to run continuously around them like he’s Goku pursuing Bubbles in popular series. With nearby platforms, players can transfer and get snatched by the gravity from adjacent structures. Other platforms are flat discs, typically including collectibles below, easily overlooked spots.

Rediscovering Classic Characters

What’s fun about experiencing this game 18 years later includes knowing familiar faces. I was unaware Rosalina originated through this adventure, or that she acted as the caring guardian for Luma creatures. Before playing Super Mario Galaxy, I only knew her as part of my regular Mario Kart World roster option. Likewise for Penguins, with whom I appreciated aquatic sections during an early beach level.

Motion Control Challenges

The only real drag in playing Super Mario Galaxy today concerns movement inputs, which are used for gathering, targeting, and firing star bits, vibrant items scattered around levels. Using portable mode meant tilting and rotating the device to direct, seeming somewhat awkward. Gyroscopic elements are prevalent in some platforming sections, requiring players to direct the star-shaped cursor at surfaces to attract Mario to them.

Levels that wholly require the motion controls perform optimally with independent remotes improving control, like the manta ray surfing level during early game. I’ve never been a fan of motion controls, while they didn't improve notably effectively in Super Mario Galaxy. Thankfully, by collecting sufficient stars through different stages, these gyroscopic sections may be completely avoided. I tried the level where Mario has to navigate a giant ball through a track dotted with holes, then quickly abandoned after initial effort.

Enduring Gaming Quality

Except for the cumbersome older input methods, there’s really nothing to criticize in Super Mario Galaxy, while its cosmic stages are a delight to explore. Although notable titles such as Odyssey appeared subsequently, Super Mario Galaxy continues as top-tier and innovative Mario games around.
